Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry white wine (Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) apple brandy or calvados
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) caramel sauce
  • 2 tablespoons (25 g) brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) apple cider
  • 2 medium Honeycrisp or Fuji apples
  • 4–5 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 orange, sliced into thin rounds
  • 1 lemon, sliced into thin rounds
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) apple cider vinegar
  • Extra apple slices for garnish (optional)
  • Extra cinnamon sticks for garnish (optional)
  • Caramel drizzle for garnish (optional)
  • Fresh mint sprigs for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the cinnamon-apple syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup (120 ml) water, 2 tablespoons (25 g) brown sugar, and 2 cinnamon sticks. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Add 1/2 cup (120 ml) apple cider and simmer for 2-3 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.
  2. Prepare the fruit: Wash and slice apples into thin rounds or small wedges. Toss with a splash of apple cider vinegar to prevent browning. Slice orange and lemon into thin rounds.
  3. Combine the base: In a large pitcher, pour the entire bottle of white wine. Add the apple brandy and the cooled cinnamon-apple syrup. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to combine.
  4. Add the caramel: Drizzle in the 1/4 cup (60 ml) caramel sauce. Stir gently until mostly incorporated.
  5. Layer in the fruit and spices: Add the apple slices, citrus slices, and remaining 2-3 cinnamon sticks to the pitcher. Gently press them down with a spoon so they are submerged.
  6. Chill and rest: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally 4-6 hours or overnight.
  7. Serve: Give the pitcher a gentle stir. Fill glasses with ice (optional). Ladle the sangria into glasses, making sure each serving gets some fruit and a cinnamon stick. Drizzle extra caramel sauce over the top if desired. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig.

Notes

Don’t boil the syrup; a gentle simmer is all you need. Use a dry white wine to balance the sweetness. Slice fruit thin for better flavor infusion. Let the sangria rest overnight if possible for the best flavor. For a crowd, you can strain the sangria before serving. The cinnamon-apple syrup can be doubled and kept in the fridge for a week.
