A creamy, tangy cheese ball studded with sweet dried cranberries and fresh green onions, coated in crunchy toasted pecans. This easy holiday appetizer comes together in 20 minutes and is perfect for Christmas parties, New Year’s Eve, or any festive gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup dried cranberries, roughly chopped
  • 4–5 green onions, thinly sliced (white and green parts)
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped and toasted
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped (for garnish, optional)
  • Crackers, crostini, apple slices, or celery sticks for serving

Instructions

  1. Soften the cream cheese: Take both blocks of cream cheese out of the refrigerator about 1-2 hours before you start. You want it to be very soft—almost room temperature. If you forget, unwrap the blocks, place them on a microwave-safe plate, and microwave on 50% power for 15-20 seconds. Check it, then repeat if needed. You don’t want it melted, just soft enough that a finger pressed into it leaves an indent.
  2. Toast the pecans: Place the chopped pecans in a small, dry skillet over medium heat. Stir them frequently—every 30 seconds or so—and watch them carefully. They can go from perfectly toasted to burnt in about 30 seconds. You’ll know they’re done when they smell fragrant and nutty, and the pieces have darkened slightly. This takes about 4-5 minutes. Pour them onto a plate to cool completely while you prepare the cheese mixture.
  3. Mix the cheese base: Place the softened cream cheese in a large mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer on medium speed, beat the cream cheese until it’s smooth and fluffy, about 1-2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Add the garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using). Beat again until everything is well combined.
  4. Fold in the mix-ins: Add the chopped dried cranberries and sliced green onions to the cream cheese mixture. Use the rubber spatula to fold them in gently, making sure they’re evenly distributed throughout. Don’t overmix—you want the cranberries and onions to stay visible and not get completely pulverized. The mixture should look studded with red and green flecks.
  5. Shape the cheese ball: Lay out a large piece of plastic wrap on your counter. Scrape the cheese mixture onto the center of the plastic wrap. Use the wrap to help you shape the cheese into a ball—gather the edges of the plastic wrap up and twist them, then use your hands (through the plastic) to form a smooth, round ball. It should be about 5-6 inches in diameter. If the mixture is too sticky, wet your hands slightly with cold water.
  6. Chill the cheese ball: Wrap the shaped cheese ball tightly in the plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator. Chill for at least 2 hours, or up to 24 hours. This is crucial—the cheese ball needs time to firm up so it holds its shape when you roll it in the pecans. I usually make it the night before and let it chill overnight. The flavors actually get better as they meld together.
  7. Roll in toasted pecans: When you’re ready to serve, place the cooled toasted pecans on a large plate or a piece of parchment paper. Unwrap the chilled cheese ball and gently roll it in the pecans, pressing lightly so the nuts adhere to the surface. Use your hands to pat on any extra pecans that don’t stick. The cheese ball should be completely coated on all sides.
  8. Garnish and serve: Transfer the coated cheese ball to a serving platter. If you’re using fresh parsley, sprinkle it over the top for a pop of green. Serve immediately with crackers, crostini, apple slices, or celery sticks. The cheese ball is best served within 30 minutes of rolling in the pecans, while the nuts are still crunchy.

Notes

Don’t skip toasting the pecans—it deepens the flavor and adds crunch. Use room temperature cream cheese for smooth blending. Chill the cheese ball thoroughly before rolling in pecans to ensure the nuts adhere. Let the cheese ball sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before serving for best spreadability. The cheese ball can be made up to 24 hours ahead (without pecan coating) and stored in the refrigerator. Freeze the unbaked cheese ball (without pecan coating) for up to 2 months.
