These Kid-Approved Witch Finger Pretzel Rods are the perfect blend of sweet, salty, and spooky, and they come together with zero baking and a whole lot of fun. They’re the kind of treat that makes you feel like you’re getting away with something, and honestly, that’s the best kind of Halloween magic.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 standard 12-ounce bag pretzel rods
  • 1 cup green candy melts or white chocolate wafers
  • 30–36 sliced almonds
  • Red sanding sugar or red jam (for ‘blood’)
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or shortening (optional, for thinning chocolate)

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Workspace: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Have your pretzel rods, sliced almonds, and red sanding sugar (or jam) within easy reach.
  2. Melt the Green Candy: Place your green candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals at 50% power, stirring well after each interval. Do not overheat! They should be smooth and fully melted after about 1.5 to 2 minutes. If the mixture is too thick, add a teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening and stir until smooth.
  3. Dip the Pretzels: Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip it into the melted green candy. Use a spoon to help coat the pretzel, or simply rotate it in the bowl. You want the candy to cover about two-thirds of the pretzel rod—this is the ‘finger’ part. Leave the top end bare so it looks like a stubby finger.
  4. Shake Off Excess: Gently tap the dipped pretzel rod against the edge of the bowl to shake off any excess candy. You want a thin, even coating, not a thick, lumpy one. A little drip at the tip is fine—it adds to the ‘witchy’ look.
  5. Place on the Sheet: Lay the dipped pretzel rod on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining pretzels, leaving a little space between each one.
  6. Attach the Fingernails: While the candy is still wet, gently press a sliced almond onto the tip of each pretzel rod. Press it down firmly so it sticks. The pointed end of the almond should face outward, away from the pretzel, like a long, sharp nail. You can angle it slightly for a more realistic, gruesome look.
  7. Add the ‘Blood’: While the candy is still tacky (but not fully set), use a small brush or your fingertip to dab a tiny bit of red sanding sugar or red jam at the base of the almond nail. This creates the illusion of a bloody cuticle. Don’t overdo it—a little goes a long way for the scare factor.
  8. Let Them Set: Allow the pretzels to set completely at room temperature. This usually takes about 15-20 minutes. Do not refrigerate them to speed up the process, as condensation can make the candy look dull. Once set, they should be hard and shiny.
  9. Add Crease Lines (Optional): For an extra creepy touch, once the candy is set, use a toothpick to gently scratch a few horizontal lines near the ‘knuckle’ area of the pretzel. This gives the illusion of wrinkled witch skin.

Notes

Do not refrigerate to set; condensation can make the candy dull. If almond keeps sliding off, dip the back of the almond in melted candy before attaching. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free pretzel rods.
